Dolphin Gets DUI

It seemed as if the arrests were about to completely subside...wait did I say completely subside? Idiot. If completely subside means 10 days, then yes it is correct. Just seven days after the most recent arrest, a Miami Dolphin was busted for a DUI.

Will this guy get treated more like Fred Evans (cut) or Joey Porter (perfectly good)? I would have to go with the latter, because "this guy" happens to be a standout wide receiever by the name of Chris Chambers. He'll be fine, despite facing charges of driving will impaired, reckless driving, and speeding. He was released on $1,750 bond. Penalties are pending.

Recent Headlines

Short version tonight, it has been a busy day. With blog vacation coming up, all fantasy work has got to get in. Coming up tomorrow we will have top 30 TEs and top 30 D/STs. For now, let's get to the headlines.

Rams Cornerback Fakhir Brown suspended four games by the NFL for violating the league's substance abuse policy. As Profootballtalk.com said it, "League tells Rams to get the Fakhir out!"

Broncos Safety Sam Brandon will be suspended two games to start the NFL season for a violation of the league's personal conduct policy. The suspension follows arrests in 2004, 2005, and 2006. Will he get arrested in '07? Brandon plans to appeal.

It is still up in the air for the penalty Dolphins outspoken linebacker Joey Porter will receive after getting his arse kicked by Bengals tackle Levi Jones. Others also pending are Bengals defensive end 99 Cent Frostee Rucker and Jaguars tackle Khalif Barnes.

Shaun Rogers, big boy defensive tackle for the Lions, will face no sexual assault charges after an exotic dancer's claim that he inappropriately touched her. Sorry girl, too many women have played that card.

The big news of the day: Colts extend Freeney. Dwight Freeney, speedster defensive end, signed a six year 72 million dollar contract. Also coming with a 30 million dollar signing bonus. Do you got enough Dwight? For all you math geniuses, that is $12 million a year. This makes the Colts the first team in NFL history with two player receiving signing bonuses of $30 million or more, the other, of course, being Peyton Manning. With Freeney now being the highest paid defensive end ever, this opens the door for other sack specialists such as Jason Taylor, Terrel Suggs, Osi Umenyiora, and Julius Peppers. What does this mean for them? Well, I would say a whole lot of $$$!

Both Corey Simon and Curtis Martin have been activated to their respective teams (Colts, Jets.) This is not because they will play, but because they will be axed.

Jerome Bettis, former Pittsburgh Steelers running back, (he sucked) who also predicted the departure of Bill Coward, (Cowher) has now called another shot. "The Bus" said yesterday that Coward (Cowher) will return next year to coach the New York football Giants, after projected one and done Head Coach Tom Coughlin is kicked out of the big apple. When "The Bus" last year said Coward (Cowher) was going to leave the Steelers (I don't blame him), Coward (Cowher) told him he was "very disappointed." As it turned out, "the Bus" was right. Will he be right again? Only time will tell. Sorry, if you haven't noticed, I despise the Steelers. A little hate can't hurt.

Finally, have you heard? Akili Smith still and forever sucks, as always. You follow? Well, the third overall pick in the 1999 draft by the Cincinnati Bengals has stunk it up even more, if possible. He took his terrible smell to Canada where he warmed the bench for the Calagary Stampeders. Well, while they got stampeded, Smith replaced starting quarterback Henry Burris. Finally getting his big chance, Smith thrived completing 60% of his passes and throwing a record low three interceptions. Way to go Akili. That is why the Bengals selected you over Edgerrin James, Torry Holt, Champ Bailey, and Daunte Culpepper. But would it have mattered? One has to believe any one of the guys they would have picked would have been a bust, that just seemed to be the way back in the days of the Cincinnati Bungles.

There you have it. Final three or four posts coming tomorrow before an extended blog vacation, for a month. More information coming on that tomorrow!

A Trio of Signings

Over the past couple days two mediocre, past-their-prime players have signed, along with a full time special teamer. Their names: Troy Brown, Donovan Darius, and Bethel Johnson. Brown and Darius, the past-their-primers, still hope to provide their team with a boost. Johnson, typically a full time special teamer, will have a chance to compete for a starting job.

Troy Brown - New England

Troy Brown has been a hero for the New England Patriots. In a time where the Patriots had no good receivers, Brown stepped in and made the catches. All the weeks where the Patriots secondary was all beat up, Brown stepped in and made game saving interceptions. Now, the man who has done it all for the Patriots, will be fighting for playing time. The 36 year old Brown signed a one year deal with the New England Patriots according to the Boston Herald.

Now the question remains, why? Yes, Troy has spent a very long time in the league, all of which with New England, we know. However, for a guy who loves the game so much. For a guy who has played so well for so long, why sign with a team that's depth chart currently holds 13 wide receivers? The Patriots will most likely keep six receivers, unless they decide to keep a seventh for special teams purposes.

Look at the depth chart. The top seven wide receivers for the Pats are: Randy Moss, Donte' Stallworth, Wes Welker, Kelley Washington, Jabar Gaffney, Reche Caldwell, and Chad Jackson. Can anyone possibly believe, can Troy possible believe, that he can beat out any one of those seven guys for a roster spot? Moss, Stallworth, Jackson, and Welker are absolute locks. One would have to believe Caldwell and Gaffney are great secondary receivers. Kelley Washington has potential, none of which could be reached when he was in Cincinnati, playing behind the Bengals star studded receiving group. Washington can also be a big help on special teams. The questions now arise, Troy where will you find any playing time? Why would New England keep a 36 year old veteran when they can have a 28 year old Washington?

Donovan Darius - Oakland Raiders

Veteran Safety Donovin Darius has a new home, after being cut by the Jacksonville Jaguars on June 14th, 9 seasons after being drafted by Jacksonville in 1998. Adam Schefter of NFL Network has reported a three year deal worth $7.1 million. A good deal for an Oakland Raiders team in desperate need of support for their run-stopping defense, well lack of run stopping defense.

Early in his career, while being named pro-bowl alternate twice, Darius was a tackling machine. He bolstered the Jaguars secondary with interceptions and pass deflections, while strengthening their run defense with spectacular tackling skills. His first seven years in the league for 1998-2004, Darius played in at least 14 games six out of those seven seasons, while playing just 11 in 2001. However, over the past two years, injuries have plagued the former star. Darius played just two games in 2005 and six games in 2006. Due to his lack of durability, the Jaguars had to let go of their seasoned strong safety.

Bethel Johnson - Houston Texans

Adam Schefter of NFL Network has also reported the signing of Bethel Johnson by the Houston Texans. The length of the deal is just one year, but the contract agreements are unknown. This is Johnson's fifth team in his short career.

A 2003 second round draft pick of the New England Patriots, Bethel Johnson had never become more than a disappointing receiver and full time special teamer for the New England Patriots. After three seasons in New England, the franchise had given up on the Texas A&M alum, sending him to New Orleans in exchange for another draft day bust in defensive tackle Jonathan Sullivan.

Johnson saw no action with the Saints and was soon cut by the organization. He was later signed by the Minnesota Vikings where he played in 11 games, starting two, in 2006. After his departure from Minnesota in March, Johnson signed with the Philadelphia Eagles, but was cut soon after in May. Now with the Texans, Bethel will be competing with Kevin Walter for a starting job. Bethel will look to make the Texans receivers a Johnson duo, hopefully starting opposite pro-bowl wide receiver Andre Johnson.

Steve McNair - Baltimore Ravens

In other news, the "DUI by consent" charges filed earlier this year against Baltimore Ravens Quarterback Steve McNair have been dropped, that according to the Baltimore Sun. Although McNair was not driving the car at the time of the arrest, his brother in law was. By Tennessee law, charges can still be filed against McNair for allowing an impaired person to drive his vehicle. However, it is over and McNair is glad it is. "I'm glad it's over, that's all that matters."

Holiday Vacaction is Over

That's unfortunate. It was a fun weekend. Lots of baseball watched, but who cares about baseball, football is what it's about! There has been a lot of news over the past couple days, all of which was left unblogged. However, this is why god has given us NFL sources other than Gridiron Gurus. Links to recent headlines will be below. You can catch up on the Vick story or the most recent arrest/suspension. Sorry we didn't cover the 7/7/07 birthdays, if it really kills you, just google it, its why google is so nice.

Tank Not Tagged With Charges

A sigh of relief has been aired on the side of one Tank Johnson. The big defensive tackle will be charged with nothing in the wake of last month's encounter with a police officer on suspicion of drunken driving. The tests are in. The tank was relatively clean.

The tests revealed a .072 blood alcohol level, just a fraction below the Arizona legal limit of .08. However, due to his slight impairment Tank could have been charged with "impairment to the slightest degree." Instead, just like so many other athletes, Tank was not charged with anything, due to a hefty donation to the local police department (just kidding.)

In a statement released by Tank Johnson, the 300 pound defensive tackle (his agent) said, "I am not surprised by this decision, but I am relieved. I am still disappointed at having been released by the Bears yet I know the organization was placed in a difficult position when I was stopped by police. Now I will move on to look for an opportunity with another NFL team, and make the most of it when it comes."

When Tank? Furthermore, where can he tank? In the Roger Goodell era, what team wants a guy who often times finds himself in the headlines for things that aren't involving community service? (Unless a court order demands community service hours, to which me must oblige.) Too often does this young defensive tackle find himself making the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

What team wants a guy like that? Well, lucky enough for him, there are some coaches desperate enough (Jon Gruden) or in need of talent enough (Joe Gibbs) to attempt to sign the oft-troubled Tank. Well, Mr. Johnson, you have a little over a month to find a destination. Expect him signed by September, if not, he will be signed by September...2008.

Bryant McNeal Arrested...Who?

NFL journeyman, current Oakland Raider Bryant McNeal was arrested in South Carolina at 3:35 a.m. EDT for driving on a suspended license and not using headlights. McNeal was also wanted on a charge in Florida on violations of pawn brokering laws.

Apparently, this three time practice squad star was wanted for cashing a fake $1,500 check to a dentist's office. McNeal is on the Oakland Raiders roster, (not for long) but was only on their practice squad. In the past he had also starred on the practice squads of the Denver Broncos (2003) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2004.) In 2005, this experienced star found himself without a job in the NFL.

Bears Ink Olsen; First First Round Pick to Sign

The Chicago Bears have announced the signing of first round pick, #31 overall, Greg Olsen out of Miami. Olsen has been signed through 2011.

ProFootballTalk.com lists out the contract like this:

In 2007, he gets a signing bonus of $250,000, a $720,000 roster bonus, and a base salary of $285,000 in 2007.

The contract also has a one-time incentive based on minimum playing time of $578,700. For 2007, the trigger is 35 percent of the offensive snaps. For future years, it is 45 percent.

In 2008, there's an option bonus of $3.545 million and a base salary of $460,000.

In 2009, the base salary is $460,000, and Olsen is eligible for a $100,000 reporting/roster bonus that is earned at the start of training camp and paid out over the course of the regular season. (We'll explain the genesis of this new bonus later.)

In 2010, the base salary is $550,000, and the reporting/roster bonus is $140,000.

In 2011, the base salary is $650,000, and the reporting/roster bonus is $125,732. The total value, including possible incentives of up to $2.921 million, is $10.69 million over five years.

Olsen's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, (next question) was able to get a deal done dispite ongoing, heated talks with the Chicago Bears over hold-out threatening linebacker Lance Briggs. Briggs and Rosenhaus are both upset with the franchise tagging over the pro bowl linebacker.

A Pair of NFL Players Suspended

Earlier this evening, it was reported that Tampa Bay Buccaneers Defensive Back Torrie Cox will be suspended for the first four games of the season for violating the league's substance-abuse policy. Just hours later, the Oakland Raiders announced the suspension of their featured running back, former Indianapolis Colt Dominic Rhodes, also a four game suspension for a violation of the same policy.

For Cox, this just adds to the list of his baggage-filled past. In 2004 and 2005, Cox received two DUIs. The specifics of the violation are unknown, but Cox will still be allowed to participate in training camp and the preseason. Cox played in all 16 games last season, starting three, but making most of his impact on special teams.

Rhodes, who was also suspended for violating the substance-abuse policy, will have to watch the Raiders play (lose) their first four games from the sideline. It is unknown if this suspension stems from Rhodes' arrest earlier this year on suspicion of DUI. He was never charged with the DUI, but could have been "in the program." Meaning, if we wasn't supposed to drink and he did, that would result in a suspension. The technicalities of this situation are complex, but the bottom line is Rhodes will not play (lose) the first four games of his first season in Oakland. Instead, recovering running back Michael Bush, from Louisville, will have a chance to prove himself with early season action.

Claude Wroten Arrested

St. Louis Rams Defensive Tackle Claude Wroten was arrested this past Thursday, for apparently kicking the door down to his girlfriend's apartment seeking items he had once bought for her. He faces one count of misdemeanor criminal damage to property.

Wroten, a third round pick in the 2006 draft, was at one time projected to be a first round pick, before he was caught with green leafy substances, not typically found during tea time. So just as our days counter had reached double digits, Wroten has quickly cut the counter days in half. Thanks Claude.

Cowboys Have No Interest in Tank, but What About LJ?

Upon the release of Chicago Bears Defensive Tackle Tank Johnson, rumor had it he would tank to Dallas. Just like most rumors typically are, this one was totally false. Actually, on draft day back in 2004, Bill Parcells and company did not list Tank on their draft board. Of all the troubled players, including Chris Henry, Odell Thurman, Pacman Jones, and Tank Johnson, the Dallas Cowboys were only willing to take a risk on Pacman Jones. According to the Cowboys, they had not known of his off the field issues. In other words, the Cowboys were willing to risk the off the field baggage for the talent.

The bottom line here is in no shape or form are the Cowboys, even with new coach Wade Phillips, interested in signing Tank Johnson. There is no doubt that Tank would fit in Phillips' scheme, there is also no doubt that the Cowboys could be interested in Tank, but do not want to admit it. Based on their apparent willingness to draft Pacman Jones, I think the Cowboys have more interest then many believe in the troubled defensive tackle. Only time will tell.

The latest rumor is the Cowboys ongoing trade talks with the Kansas City Chiefs regarding star running back Larry Johnson. This could be another attempt by the Chiefs to help their negotiations with the running back, or it could be for real. My personal instincts tell me no chance that the Chiefs give up their do-it-all running back. Paint this story false as well.

Lavar Arrington Out of the Hospital

Two weeks ago, pro bowl linebacker Lavar Arrington was involved in a dangerous motorcycle accident. Fast forward two weeks, and the linebacker is finally released from the hospital.

Arrington, 29, was walking with a noticible limp as he left the hospital. Arrington's agent Rosalyn Pugh said, "He's doing much better. I won't say he's 100 percent, but he's doing better."

Now for Arrington is the recovery process. Although there is no timetable, he does have to put his football career on hold due to a broken forearm. Now, Arrington will focus all his efforts on his new restaurant in D.C.

Tank Stayed Below the Level

In his most recent arrest, Tank Johnson was pulled over for speeding, and then arrested on suspicion of drunken driving. He was not booked or charged with anything, due to pending blood tests. The test results are in.

As it turns out, Tank Johnson's blood alcohol level was .072, just below the legal limit in Arizona of .08%. Charges have still not been filed and will not be filed until the investigation is complete, if they are filed at all.

By Arizona law, Johnson could still be charged with "impairment to the slightest degree." This is due to the fact that the state does not have to show blood tests to bring the minimum charge.

Now this raises the question, did the Bears jump the gun? Did they release Tank too soon? Well, given his track record, I think not. You be the judge, vote in the poll question of the week!

Jon From Cincinnati

Jon from Cincinnati, also known as Detroit Lions quarterback Jon Kitna, has made another erroneous prediction. According to the quarterback, not only will he lead his team to a 10+ win season, he will also throw 50 touchdowns. That's right, 50.

Kitna said that he and his receivers always joke around saying he will throw 50, but I think Kitna actually believes he can accomplish the feat, even if he is the only one who believes so. Many "experts" said they liked Kitna basically guaranteeing a 10 win season, because it gives the team confidence, but now, Jon, you just look stupid. Congratulations, you're the biggest fool in football.
